General Interest Astronomy and Space Stuff

StarDate This short daily radio program about astronomy airs on several central Oklahoma radio stations (KGOU 106.3 FM at 6:57AM and 6:57PM, for one). I try to listen every day- it is usually interesting and informative. If you don't catch the radio broadcast, go to the web site to read the radio script.

Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) . - Every day a different astronomy picture, some from groundbased telescopes, some from satellites, with informative captions and links to more information. You could learn a lot by looking at this every day! There is also an archive of past images for browsing.

International Dark-Sky Association Astronomers! Take back the Night! The IDA promotes saving one of our most precious natural wonders - the dark night sky. The IDA has LOTS of info on good lighting practices (we can have a dark sky and light where needed at the same time), and lots of links to astronomy and lighting sites. One of my favorite items is the night-time image of the US. See if you can find your city! (click on "Links and Web Resources", then "IDA's DarkSky Finder" under "W3 Resources" near end of page). Consider joining the IDA.

The Planetary Society. The largest (100,000 member) space interest organization in the world. Founded by Carl Sagan and Bruce Murray. If you are interested in the future of planetary exploration, consider joining this group- they welcome everyone who has an interest in the future of human exploration of space.

Nine Planets- A Multimedia Tour of the Solar System A single place to find lots of nice pictures of the planets and further information.

Astronomical Society of the Pacific The ASP is a nation- wide organization of amateur and professional astronomers with great interest in public outreach and education issues in astronomy. If you are just looking for a cool poster of the sky or some other astronomical item for yourself or a gift, check out their catalog.

Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Lots of fantastic images from HST and other good stuff. A separate home page (www.stsci.edu) is aimed at professional astronomers, with more techical infomation about the telescope and observing with HST.

National Optical Astronomy Observatories NSF funded national optical grondbased observatory, with telescopes in Arizona, Chile, and Hawaii. Lots of images and other public outreach stuff on the "Public and Educational Outreach Programs" link (next to the picture of the Horsehead Nebula). Also, check out the "NOAO Image Gallery". If you are going to be in southern Arizona and want to see the Kitt Peak National Observatory, about 50 miles from Tucson, see the "Tourist Information" section.

Lowell Observatory Lowell Observatory is where the planet Pluto was discovered. They have a great visitors center and some nighttime public viewing. Located in Flagstaff, AZ, one of my favorite spots in the Known Universe!

NASA This is the main NASA homepage. Of general interest will be the "Cool NASA Websites" accessible from this page.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory JPL is one of the centers for solar system study using robotic spacecraft.
